Poetry From the Heart (and Sometimes the Funny Bone)
One of my favorite parts of creating ceremonies is writing personal poems for my couples and families. Not generic love sonnets (unless you actually want that), but bespoke pieces that capture your quirks, your journey, and your unique relationship.
Here's where I share examples of my work—poems that made people laugh, cry, or both. Each one was written specifically for the couple or family it celebrated, but they'll give you a sense of what's possible.
What Makes a Good Ceremony Poem?
-
The best ceremony poems are:
- Personal: They include specific details only you would recognize
- Authentic: They sound like something you might actually say
- Balanced: Humor and heart in equal measure (or weighted toward whichever you prefer)
- Memorable: Guests remember them long after the ceremony ends

When New Zealand met Cornwall in Manchester
When New Zealand met Cornwall in old Manchester town
Jack was wandering around with a bit of a frown
Then the light of his life popped up in a café
He bought her a coffee, then they jumped on the tramway.
The weather up there is no holiday
It’s a bit like New Zealand on a very rainy day
Laura says ‘the pies up North are a bit like a pasty
But the ones from that cafe are a little bit nasty!’
That day at the seaside, when you were wind-swept and blown
Making castles of sand and towers of stone
One of your first dates together, the time it had flown
But that trip to Southport wasn’t much like home
(Jacks from New Zealand you know)
After they met love started to blossom
Laura thought Jack ‘really was awesome!’
Dated a bit, had an adventure or two
Up Kilimanjaro Jack knew what to do!
He popped the question, got down on his knees
The air up there it was so hard to breathe,
All he could say was
Laura - Oh, please!
They both work hard to bring home the pay
Jack in marketing is making his way
Laura loves teaching, she’s so good with the pupils
It’s her career for life without any scruples
At home, Jack does the cooking, it’s totally fab
Laura does the shopping, and she picks up the tab
The rest of the chores they share all the time
Keeping the flat, with a really good shine
Trixie the dog off for her walks in the park
The way they toddle along, really is a lark
Jack throwing sticks, Trixie barking away
It’s how those two like to finish a really good day
The Blessing
The blessings of life we bestow upon you,
As you tie the knot
We wish that wealth and prosperity
Will always be your lot
May time bring you a family full
To give you joy and comfort
With love and care a lifetime long
And a fire to sit and share
With sunny days at harvest time
And fair winds when you sail,
As you travel along life's road
You have each other to have and hold.

Baby on Board
Baby on board the car sign now says,
The nappies, the night feeds, all part of the days.
Giggling playtime with dad on the floor,
Daddy is here for bath time and more.
A house in the country with rooms to spare,
Now there are three of us living there.
With cuddles and snuggles and love to share,
Off on our travels, who knows where?
A lifetime ahead full of love and care,
You will know that we will always be there.
Frankie our beautiful boy so strong,
We longed for you, ever so long.
With every step, with every sigh,
We cherish you more than words can tie.
A baby on board, a dream come true,
Our little boy, all dressed in blue.
Love is
Love is the way I feel about you
Love is the way you feel, too
Love is the hug first thing in the morning
That feels special, even when you're yawning
Love is a kiss when I come home
Love is listening to me moan
Love is a cup of tea in a cosy chair
You brought me because you know I was sitting there
Love is the clean towel you put for my bath
Love is when you make me laugh
Love is ‘being there’ even when you're not
Love is a feeling that can't be forgot
Jump In
In a cosy home with laughter and joy
A mum, a dad a girl, and boy
With hearts full of love and sprits free
They play and dream endlessly
A bloom stick rests against the door,
Not for sweeping, but for more
A magic touch that holds them tight
Keeps them together day and night
A family bond with love so wide,
With every jump, full of pride,
It holds them close in a bond
Formed today and ever long
With this jump, and our great cheer,
The life they make, will always be dear
Their home a place of dreams, love and grace
Where joy and magic will fill the place.
Marriage is?
Marriage is a little time to spend together
To contemplate upon the weather
It's going out, holding hands
Once you’ve had your wedding bands
It's when you wonder what's for tea?
And think together what it will be
Who is cooking, and who's washing up
Sharing the job, that’s just enough
Marriage is coming home feeling cross.
When you had a ding-dong with the boss
You didn’t say anything at work!
Just come home and acted like a jerk!
It's knowing that they will forgive you
And understand - that’s just what you do
They hold you tight, make you feel better
Then help you write that apology letter!
Marriage is that cupper in bed in the morning
Having to change plans without any warning
It’s the invisible thread, making a tie
It’s the best way in life to get by
Together
My Girls
My girls so bright and strong
I loved you ever so long
All the family days and barbecues
You made my life full of colourful hues
My girls the cream of the crop
When you were little, kept me on the hop
Running round and having fun
You kept going till the day was done
My girls the loves of my life
The bond between us sharp as a knife
I always loved you, always will
A father's love always fits the bill
My girls there when I needed you most
I was the proudest father – I could boast
With girls like you, I had it all
I held up my head and walked so tall
My girls are fierce and brave
Your love took me to the grave
You were there with me all the way
Thank you is all that I can say
My girls pretty as a flower
God only knows where you got the power
You're stronger than a bar of iron
With the spirit of a horse and the heart of a lion
My girls, I loved you more than words can say
Each amazing in your own way
Go through the world, never stray
Live your ‘best life’ every day
Your dad
Wedding day
Here it is; your day has come
Tom standing here with his mum
Jessie’s parents are here too
I’m told they stuck together like glue!
Dad’s on duty to give you away
And that’s the start of this wonderful day
So what do we know about this pair?
Tom likes everything fair and square.
Jessie, it seems is the spending Queen
Sometimes it makes Tom look quite mean
In Germany, they did engage?
Him kneeling down in a bed of sage
An adventure at the Castle of Schloss
Tom wondered if she was after his dosh
Jessie, with her Auburn hair
Being one of four, she had to learn to share
In years to come, the family will grow
The years will pass faster than you will know
But for now, there is one special little guy
He’s the black-and-white sprocker with the lovely brown eyes
He jumps and bounds just like when you drop a sprocket
He runs so fast that they had to call him Rocket!
Who else is here on this special day?
The two maids of honour, like blossom in May
We have a little princess –Poppy- walking Jessie down the aisle
Hasn’t she got such a beautiful smile?
Tom's got his best man; they’ve been through it all
And when he does his speech, the tales are bound to be tall!
Down on the farm is where the seeds were sewn
For a life together, a house, a home
And you are all here to see them tie the knot
And act as witness, so the deed can’t be forgot
So raise your hands and give a cheer
This couple's life begins right here
To Tom and Jessie
Commission a Poem for Your Ceremony
Every ceremony package includes a bespoke poem, but if you'd like additional poems (perhaps one from parents, or one for each section of the ceremony), we can discuss that.
